Report highlights problems, solutions to childhood hunger in Douglas County

In 2016, Lawrence was one of 20 cities selected to participate in CHAMPS (Cities Combating Hunger through Afterschool and Meal Programs) by the National League of Cities. Participation allowed project partners to:

  • Learn about successful approaches other communities use in summer/afterschool meal programs.
  • Conduct local focus groups to understand how students, parents and educators perceive these programs.
  • Pilot an afterschool meal program.

What our community learned is compiled in this “Seeking Solutions to Childhood Hunger” report.  The report includes data, quotes from focus group participants, and recommendations for action.

“Our hope is that this report can help spur change in our community,” said LiveWell Chair-elect Christina Holt, a member of the Healthy Food For All work group.
