Fact sheet outlines 2019 proposed changes to Sidewalk Hazard Mitigation Program

The City of Lawrence has begun Phase 2 of its Sidewalk Hazard Mitigation Program. The area included in Phase 2 is bounded:

  • on the north by W 23rd Street (includes both sides of 23rd);
  • on the South Lawrence Trafficway/K-10;
  • on the west by Iowa Street (includes both sides of Iowa);
  • on the east by Barker Avenue, Vermont Street, Montana Street and Louisiana Street.

LiveWell Douglas County has supported city efforts to improve the sidewalk network and will continue to closely monitor progress on the city's sidewalk program.

While rebuilding hazardous sidewalks remains the financial responsibility of the homeowner of the property adjacent to the defective sidewalk, city assistance is available to low-income residents who must rebuild sidewalks.

There have also been changes made to the program in 2019 which allow residents to have the city oversee sidewalk repairs and make payments to the city. By selecting this option residents can avoid having to go through the process of hiring a contractor to do the work.

LiveWell has developed a fact sheet about the city's program which you can find at this link.
