A ribbon cutting ceremony for the newest segment of the Lawrence Loop was held on October 22nd. The new segment runs from Peterson Park to North Michigan Street. The trail passes north of the Hallmark production facility. It features a tunnel passing under the Turnpike interchange at McDonald Drive. Pedestrian-activated beacons to provide safe crossing are in place at North Iowa and at North Michigan Streets.
The work began in February and was completed in October. The project was 80% funded through a Federal Transportation Alternatives grant. Nineteen miles of the eventual 22 mile path are complete. The Lawrence Loop is a paved 10-foot wide shared use path. The City of Lawrence began construction more than 20 years ago. The Loop accommodates residents and visitors of all ages and abilities who walk, run, bike or wheel the trail.
